Board of Directors
Riseup Society is a registered charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who recognize the impacts of family violence and are committed to addressing the issue through their involvement in the Riseup Society.
Board Members listed below are current as of June, 2017. Three members stepped down (Erna Carter, Lorraine Weir, and Sherry Guglich). Board wishes to thank Erna Carter for sharing her leadership skills as she guided Riseup as Chair for the last few years and for dedicating 6 years to the Riseup Board. Board also wishes to thank Lorraine Weir for her energy and enthusiasm in planning events and bringing great ideas to the table. Lorraine stepped down from the board in 2016. Sherry Guglich finished her term in the spring of 2017 and the Board is grateful for her dedication and commitment to the work of Riseup.
Diann Tansem, Chair
Diann Tansem has been a resident of Leduc for 10 years. She is a Registered Psychologist and is currently employed as a Clinical Supervisor with Alberta Health Services, Addiction & Mental Health. In addition, Diann has a part-time private practice in Leduc. She has worked with children, youth and families since 1981 and has a strong passion for helping others to live their best lives. Diann has been a Board Member with Riseup Society Alberta for three years and is committed to helping those who have been impacted by domestic violence.
Donna Chen, Vice Chair
Donna Chen has been a resident of Leduc for the past five years. She has been in the service industry for the past 35 years in various management positions. A local business owner, she holds the Tim Hortons franchise with restaurants in Leduc and Nisku. Donna always gives back to the communities where she lives. She volunteered with Big Sisters of Peel Region, and in the 1980s, with the Elizabeth Fry Foundation in Vancouver, B.C. She served as Rotarian in Inveremere, BC., and has done significant work with the Family Resource Centre, where she served on the Board of Directors. The desire to serve women facing particular challenges in communities is very important to her. She is currently an Ambassador for the Tim Hortons Children Foundation that sends over 19,000 kids to the various camps in Canada and the USA on an annual basis. Her focus continues to be on, “possibilities not problems”. A quote she often shares is that “The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not fighting the old, but on building the new”.
Leanne Fischbuch, Secretary
Leanne Fischbuch is a new Riseup board member. Leanne has over 19 years of experience with not-for-profit governance, program delivery and management primarily in the agriculture sector. She has been a resident in Leduc County for over 16 years and has watched the communities within the area grow and prosper. The attraction to volunteer with Riseup is the opportunity for Leanne to give back to the community and help Riseup continue with the important vision of having a community free of domestic violence and abuse.
Susan Schuurman, Treasurer
Susan Schuurman and her husband own and operate a dairy farm southeast of Leduc where they have lived for the past 26 years. As her kids went through school and were involved in various activities, Susan served on school fundraising committees, the school board and as a 4H leader. She has been involved with Riseup for many years and has served on the board for the past four years. Susan has always helped out where needed and taken on many duties to fill in any gaps at Riseup.
Victoria Summers recently moved to Leduc from London, England. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting & Finance (Honours) from the University of Northampton and her familiarity with accounting and finance will be well received by the Board. Victoria wants to be an active member of the community and feels strongly about helping vulnerable members of society.
Jeana Schuurman has been a director with Riseup Society Alberta since 2015. Jeana grew up on a farm south of Leduc. After completing her degree at Trinity Western University, she began her career as a Policy and Communications Specialist with the Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia. In 2014, Jeana moved back to Alberta. She currently works for the Government of Alberta in the field of communications and dispute resolution.
Susan Young, RN, MN has worked extensively with victims of violence throughout her career in a health care setting. She is interested in bringing her skills and expertise to the community. Susan has extensive experience in leadership, research, project management, strategic planning and budget management. Susan has worked on many committees and volunteers many hours in the community and will be an asset to the Riseup Board.
